Moncton is the second largest city in New Brunswick, and it one of the key centres of the Maritimes. The metropolitan area also includes nearby Dieppe and Riverview, as well as some of neighbouring Westmorland and Albert counties. The original settlers in the area known today as Moncton were Mi'kmaq, it was a hub city even then for the native portage route. French settlers arrive in 1733, and the area fell under British control in 1755. Established one hundred years later in 1855, for over 250 years, Moncton has retained is bilingual uniqueness, and has been an important centre in Atlantic Canada ever since. Today, Moncton is home to metropolitan population of over 117,000. It is home to many industries, Université de Moncton, and Atlantic Baptist University.
